Rupganj fire tragedy: 21 more bodies to be released Saturday

Total 24 identified bodies were handed over to their families on Wednesday

The authorities are set to hand over the remains of 21 bodies of the workers, who died in the Hashem Foods Ltd factory fire at Rupganj of Narayanganj on July 8, to their families on Saturday.

The forensic unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has completed DNA analysis of 45 out of 48 unidentified bodies. Of them, 24 bodies were released on Wednesday.

Of the remaining bodies, 15 were kept at the mortuaries of Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and eight at Dhaka Medical College Hospital emergency unit.

Sikandar Ali, a morgue assistant at the DMC morgue, on Friday said: "After handing over the 24 bodies on Wednesday, we had only one body left here. The 23 other bodies were brought to the morgue on Friday morning by the CID.”

The identified 21 victims are Mosammat Mahmuda Akhter, Shanta Moni, Mahbubur Rahman, Jihad Rana, Rahima Akhter, Mina Khatun, Md Noman, Amena Akhter, Mosammat Rahima, Rabeya Akhter, Md Akash Mia, Md Nazmul Hossain, Kalpana Rani Barman, Swapan Mia, Shefali Mosammat Amrita Begum, Md Shamim, Selina Akhter, Taslima Akhter, Fakima Akhter, and Md Hasnain.

Narayanganj district administration gave Tk25,000 to the families of each victim for holding the funerals.

Regarding the three unidentified bodies, CID Special Superintendent of Police (Forensic) Romana Akhter earlier said that it was taking longer to identify the three victims as forensic officials had to extract their DNA samples from their tissues, teeth and bones because their bodies had been totally burnt in the fire.
