People becoming violent against domesticated animals worry activists

A resident of Shekhertek area under Adabor police station was attacked by some people on Monday for protesting against the eviction of a pregnant dog from the premises of a house.

Visual artist Syed Muhammad Zakir posted about the eviction on Facebook on Saturday seeking help as two residents of the same building had driven away the mother dog putting it into distress and threatened him for speaking in favor of the dog.

“They again threatened me today [Saturday] for allowing the dog to give birth to babies late on Friday night,” he said.

On Sunday, Syed Zakir said, he went to the police station to file a general diary but the law enforcers refused to register it.

On Monday, four to five people assaulted him, and also snatched his phone, he said.

In response to his Facebook post, some 50 activists from different parts of Dhaka gathered at the house on Monday afternoon. Later police came and sought time to settle the matter, said Dipanwita Ridi, founder of ALB Animal Shelter, who went to the spot.

Ridi said the abusers, one of them identified himself as locally influential Masud, and the other men who supported him during the discussions, showed audacity in front of the police.

They threatened the protesters and hurled abuses to silence them, she added.

"The men responsible for the attack didn’t say sorry and refused to sign an undertaking. Police said they would take action if repeated," Ridi said.

She added that they had assured the locals of taking measures to control the number of dogs in the area.

Earlier last month, the authorities at Mohakhali DOHS issued a notice announcing that no dogs would be allowed outside home without an owner and a collar containing an identification token reportedly after attacks by some stray dogs.

A similar incident took place at Japan Garden City in Mohammadpur, where some residents castigated a woman for feeding stray dogs.

In a Facebook live on Monday, Ridi also explained the two incidents of dogs biting in Urdu Road area of Old Dhaka. She said the incidents happened since some residents had irritated the dogs regularly.

The activists later sought help of the police to ask the residents of the area not to cull dogs under the pretext of the two incidents.
