BGB claims he jumped into the river in handcuffs
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday recovered the body of an Indian citizen from the Trimohoni area near the Padma River in Rajshahi.
The deceased has been identified as Bharat Mandal, 33, from Chakradharpur West Colony village in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India.
The BGB filed an unnatural death case with Katakhali police station in Rajshahi after they recovered the body from the river at 6am on Sunday.
Quoting BGB officials, Katakhali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Siddiqur Rahman said Mandal was a drug smuggler who entered Bangladesh at around 2am on Saturday. Members of BGB's Padma Char Border Outpost No 10 caught him and recovered 100 bottles of phensedyl from his possession.
Mandal reportedly jumped into the river while still wearing handcuffs when BGB officials were transporting him by boat.
The death will be investigated by Naval police and necessary steps will be taken after submission of the autopsy report, added the OC.
