Covid-19: Bangladesh records 18 more deaths, 617 new cases

Daily infection rate remains below 5% for 13 straight days

Bangladesh tallied another 18 deaths from coronavirus and 617 new infections on Sunday.

Besides, 1,112 more patients recovered from the disease in the 24 hours between 8am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 27,573, the total caseload to 1,557,964 and the total number of recoveries to 1,518,754.

As many as 21,246 samples were tested during the 24-hour period, yielding an infection rate of 2.9%.

With this, the daily test positivity rate has stayed below 5% for 13 consecutive days, while the overall infection rate in the country stands at 15.91%.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 22.71 on Sunday.

Dhaka and Chittagong each counted seven deaths, while Khulna and Rajshahi reported two deaths each.

All 18 of them died at different hospitals across the country.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 401 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 109.

Meanwhile, the latest figures have put the recovery rate at 97.48% and the mortality rate at 1.77%.

Around 33.66 million people in the country have received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. Of them, some 17.03 million have taken both doses, as DGHS data aggregated till Saturday show.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year. The first death was reported 10 days later.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 4.81 million lives and infected more than 235.48 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 212.28 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
