Lime cultivation brings good fortune to Sylhet farmers

The traditional variety of lime locally known as ‘Kagoji Lebu’ is very juicy and has a  good yield, says a local farmer

Several farmers in Sonatanpunji village on the outskirts of Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet are changing their fate for the better with lime cultivation.

The region, defined by hilly terrain and a humid subtropical climate, provides a suitable environment for an optimum growth of the citrus fruit. 

The farmers’ success has been encouraging many others in neighbouring villages to take up cultivation of the zesty fruit, locally known as “Kagoji Lebu”.

On a recent visit to Sonatanpunji village, this correspondent saw vast areas given over to lime orchards. Each orchard had trees that were bustling with ripe lime, rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

Farmers say the yield has been good this season and during this Ramadan, the juicy fruit is high in demand.

Local lime grower Mamun said, “In the past, the price for limes was low. Now, the price has risen along with demand. So we are making good profit.”

Another farmer, Fazal Ahmed, said around 3,000-4,000 pieces of lime were picked from each orchard every week. “We are selling lemons at Tk5,000-6,000 per thousand pieces in the wholesale market. The wholesalers collect them directly from the orchards, which also saves their transportation cost.”

Farmer Moinul Hossain said lime cultivation required comparatively less labour and resulted in greater yield.  “The climate of this region is suitable for lime cultivation. I planted the traditional lime variety on the advice of agricultural officials. Three months after the seedlings are planted the plants start flowering and fruits appear in six months.” 

This traditional variety of lime locally known as “Kagoji Lebu” is very juicy and bears good yield, he added.

Alauddin, a local resident who was visiting the lime orchards to speak to farmers, said he also had some fallow land in that area and was interested in planting limes. 

He also mentioned that it was mesmerizing to see so many lime trees bustling with the healthy green fruits.

Kanaighat Upazila Agriculture Officer Tanvir Ahmed said initiated farmers acting on DAE officials’ advice had planted 30-35 lime orchards in the region.

“The agriculture office has been providing necessary assistance to lime growers and they have been successful in the orchards, which is why many people are becoming interested in lime cultivation.

“Lime cultivation is also creating employment opportunities for the unemployed youth of the upazila,” he said.
