The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined business enterprise Chin Hung Fibres Ltd a total Tk 4.8 lakh for polluting the Karnaphuli River.
DoE Director (Chittagong Metro) Mohammad Nurullah Noori slapped the fine following hearings at his office on Monday.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, DoE Deputy Director Mia Mahmudul Hoque said that the guilty party was penalized for a faulty Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and releasing liquid waste beyond parameters set in environmental rules.
Chin Hung Fibres Ltd is located in Chandgaon industrial area of Chittagong.
On February 16, a two-member enforcement team of the DoE inspected the enterprise and collected samples of the liquid waste from the ETP outlet.
The samples, which were analyzed at the DoE laboratory, revealed that the enterprise had been polluting the environment for a long time by running the faulty ETP and releasing liquid waste beyond the acceptable limit.
