Farmers Bank scandal: MK Alamgir denies all allegations

Update : 13 Feb 2018, 01:37 AM
Dismissing allegations of his involvement in the Farmers Bank loan scandal on Monady, MP and former Farmers Bank chairman Dr MK Alamgir said reports run in three newspapers that linked him to the irregularities were “untrue.” "They (the newspapers) reported that I took commission from clients before the distribution of loans. I never faced such false allegations in my 77 years," he said when taking the floor on point of order in the House. He added that nobody had ever been able to prove such allegations against him even though he was previously managing director of Shilpa Bank, chairman of Krishi Bank and Shilpa Rin Sangstha, and executive director of Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank. According to the newspaper reports, MK Alamgir transferred Tk13 crore to his account from that of a client on July 17 last year.

"No such money entered my account on July 17, or even in the subsequent 7-10 days," he said, adding that such allegations were a barrier to creating a healthy atmosphere in society. The ruling party MP further said that no loans were processed without approval from the central bank during his tenure as Farmers Bank chairman, with a Bangladesh Bank observer having overseen the activities of the Farmers Bank board of directors over the two years. MK Alamgir added that Farmers Bank always tried to recruit competent officers, and had appointed more descendants of freedom fighters than any other private bank
