TIB survey: Law enforcement agencies most corrupt

Department of Immigration and Passport, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority also feature as corrupt service sectors

A household survey conducted by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has said that law enforcement agencies form the most corrupt service sector in the country.

Published on Thursday, the survey, titled "Corruption in Service Sectors: National Household Survey 2017" further reveals that the Department of Immigration and Passport and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) occupy the second and third position among the most corrupt service sectors.

The findings of the survey were unveiled at a press conference held at TIB's Dhanmondi office in Dhaka, reports UNB. 

It says that 72.5% of households have been victims of corruption by law enforcement agencies, 67.3% victims of corruption by the Department of Immigration and Passport and 65.4% victims of corruption by BRTA. 

At the press conference, Executive Director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman said that the National Household Survey 2017 shows that overall, 66.5% households have been victims of corruption while using services. Of them, 49.8% had to bribe officials.

The survey also revealed that, in 2017, an amount of Tk10,688.9 crore was paid as bribes in the services sector— 0.5% of the country's GDP in the fiscal year 2016-17, and 3.4% of the revised budget of the same fiscal year.

TIB trustee board chairperson Sultana Kamal was also present at the press briefing.
