Police forms committee to investigate graft allegations

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Md Mizanur Rahman, has been suspended and made an officer on special duty (OSD).

"Nobody is above the law. A legal process is underway and punishment will be awarded as per the law," the minister said, talking to reporters at the secretariat in the capital on Tuesday.

Earlier, police formed a committee to investigate allegations of graft against DIG Mizan and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Khandaker Enamul Basir.

Moinur Rahman Chowdhury, additional IGP (Admin), has been made the chief of the probe body, which also includes Additional IGP (Finance) Shahabuddin Qureshi, and Superintendent of Police at the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Miah Masud Karim.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (Media), Sohel Rana, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune, saying that further measures will be taken once the investigation report has been submitted.

He said, “Any action against them will be taken by the Home Ministry on the basis of the probe's findings, as the police have no authority to punish DIG rank police officers.”

Previously, DIG Mizan said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director, Enamul Basir, accepted his bribes worth Tk40 lakh in two phases, in exchange for information.

On June 10, the ACC said it suspended its director, Enamul, and removed him from the probe team that was investigating the wealth of Mizan, for his leaking of the probe report to Mizan.

The home minister said action will be taken against Mizan if it is proven that he bribed ACC Director Basir.

Last year, the ACC launched a probe into the wealth of DIG Mizan when he was relieved of his duties following allegations of torturing a woman.

Basir was a member of the ACC probe team investigating the DIG’s wealth.
