ACC says officials of the health ministry and DGHS will face interrogation over Regent Hospital scam

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said the commission will open an investigation on the recent allegations against Regent Hospital’s corruption and irregularities.

The commission will also interrogate officials of the Ministry of Health and Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to ascertain if they are found to be involved in the irregular activities of Regent Hospital during the investigation.

The ACC Secretary Dilwar Bakht made the statement in a press briefing at the ACC headquarter on Thursday.

The secretary said ACC will soon start investigating the allegations of irregularities and corruption of Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim, owner of Regent Group and Regent Hospital.

As part of the investigation, ACC will summon officials of the health ministry and DGHS for questioning.

Dilwar also stated that health officials will also be summoned regarding the ongoing N-95 mask corruption. An ACC investigation is currently going on in that regard.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health issued a letter on Thursday, seeking an explanation on how Regent Hospital got the certificate to become a Covid-19 dedicated hospital without renewing its license.

On Monday, the Uttara and Mirpur offices of the Regent Hospital were raided under the leadership of Executive Magistrate Sarowar Alam of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) mobile court.

The hospital was deceiving and extorting money from the general people by providing them with Covid-19 certificates without conducting any tests. RAB's mobile court found evidence of at least 6,000 fake Covid-19 test certificates.

A day later, on Tuesday, RAB sealed off the head office of Regent Hospital with directives from DGHS. A case has been filed against 17 people, including Regent Group Chairman Shahed, with Uttara West police station.

On the same day, DGHS ordered the closure of both the Mirpur and Uttara branches of the Regent Hospital.

Meanwhile, Shahed Karim, the owner of Regent Hospital, has been banned from leaving the country. Law enforcement is on the hunt to arrest him.
