Update : 08 Dec 2016, 06:10 PM
Gambling will remain banned at 13 renowned clubs in and outside Dhaka as the Supreme Court has not extended the stay order given by the High Court on the issue. The four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Thursday asked the Dhaka Club authorities to file a regular leave-to-appeal petition on Sunday. A lawyer for the petitioner, Redwan Ahmed Ranjib, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. On December 4, the High Court directed the government to stop gambling in the renowned clubs immediately, in response to a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyers Samiul Huq and Rokonuddin Md Faruq. The clubs are Dhaka Club Limited, Uttara Club Ltd, Gulshan Club Ltd, Dhanmondi Club Ltd, Banani Club Ltd, Officers’ Club Dhaka, Ladies’ Club Dhaka, Cadet College Club Dhaka, Chittagong Club Ltd, Chittagong Seniors’ Club Ltd, Narayanganj Club Ltd, Khulna Club Ltd and Sylhet Club Ltd. The Dhaka Club authorities filed a petition seeking a stay on the High Court order. The Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division on Tuesday stayed the High Court order for a day and forwarded the petition to the regular bench for hearing. The petition citing the DMP Ordinance 1976, Chittagong Metropolitan Police Ordinance 1978 and Public Gambling Act 1867 said that any kind of gambling is illegal. But these clubs arrange gambling for their members only. Even they have to put the related information on their websites. On December 4, the High Court in a rule also asked the government authorities as to why directions should not be made to take actions against unlawful business and indoor games mainly cards, dice and housie playing in exchange of money, wager, stake or any other benefits.
