Man jailed for 12 years in Chittagong gold smuggling case

A court in Chittagong sentenced a man to 12 years in jail on Monday afternoon for smuggling 75 gold bars into Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport in 2013. The court of Metropolitan Session Magistrate Shahe Nur handed down the verdict around 2pm in the presence of the accused, Md Jamal Uddin. "A total of eight witnesses testified in the case (and) the court has found the convict guilty beyond doubt," said public prosecutor advocate Fakhruddin Chowdhury. According to the case statement, Jamal was detained at the green channel of Shah Amanat International Airport after landing in Chittagong from Dubai on November 22, and 75 gold bars were seized from his possession. Later, a case was lodged with Patenga police station in this connection. After an investigation, police pressed charges against Jamal on March 7, 2014. The court then framed charges against him on September 6, 2015.
