The High Court has issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why the Ducsu elections should not be resumed.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman on Sunday also asked why the authorities had failed to hold the elections for the past 27 years and why their inaction should not be declared illegal.
The education secretary, DU vice-chancellor, proctor and registrar, among others, have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Two former students and a current student filed the writ petition on Thursday. The court held a primary hearing on Sunday.
Elections to the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) and the hall units were last held on July 6, 1990. But the elections slated for 1992 did not take place though a democratic government assumed office in 1991, after more than 16 years of military rule.
The last Ducsu committee was dissolved on May 28, 1998.
Over the past two decades, DU student organisations have consistently been demanding that the elections be held. Even the VC pledged that the elections would be resumed.
Currently, Dhaka University has around 33,000 students and about 1,800 teachers. The Teachers' Association holds elections regularly.
During the 50th convocation of Dhaka University earlier this month, President Abdul Hamid warned that a vacuum of leadership would be created in the country’s politics if the Ducsu elections did not take place.
Describing the glorious past of student politics, Hamid said that there was no alternative to political leadership for the nation’s development.
