After examining 15 of the 23 prosecution witnesses, Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict in Manik’s presence. Manik was a dishwasher at the Arian Korean restaurant run by Rou Jong Sing, 69, and her husband, Park Jang Sing. According to the case statement, on November 9, 2011, Manik entered Rou’s residence, located in the city’s Gulshan area, and attempted to murder her with a sharp weapon because her daughter had misbehaved with him and because his employers frequently failed to pay his salary on time. The same day, the victim’s husband filed a murder case with the Gulshan Police Station. When the police arrested Manik, he gave a confessional statement under section 164 before the court. On July 23, 2012, the court framed the charges against the accused after Detective Branch Inspector Md Nure Alam Miah, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet.
