A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice to the police chief and the home secretary demanding the arrest of Brac University professor and journalist Afsan Chowdhury for his Facebook post on Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
The lawyer, SM Zulfikar Ali Zunu, served the notice on Monday which demands that Afsan be arrested within 24 hours, reports Bangla Tribune.
According to the notice, Afsan posted false and slanderous comments on Facebook about the Chief Justice, the Judiciary and several prominent individuals, and misleading comments about Hefazat-e-Islam, which is a punishable offence under the ICT Act.
Moreover, the veteran journalist posted derogatory comments about the ongoing trial of the 16th amendment of the constitution, which undermine and demean the Judiciary, the notice says.
Along with the inspector general of police and the secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the lawyer also made the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the deputy commissioner of Gulshan Zone, the Cyber Crime Unit of police, and the OCs of Gulshan and Shahbagh police stations in Dhaka respondents to the notice.
It asked why Afsan would not be arrested under the ICT Act within 24 hours of the letter's delivery, and why investigation would not be initiated over the general diary filed with Gulshan police station in this regard.
The lawyer also said he would file a writ with the High Court against Afsan if he is not arrested within the designated time.
