When Khazida Begum went to visit her 8-year-old son in Bagerhat on Thursday, with an umbrella as a gift because it was raining, it is unlikely that she intended to die. Her ex-husband, it seems, had different ideas.
On her way back from the visit to Porakhali village, Khazida was stabbed to death.
The incident took place near the Porakhali Government Primary School, where victim Khazida Begum's son Zobaer studies.
According to witnesses, Khazida was brutally attacked by her ex-husband Sheikh Zakir Hossain on her way back from the school. She jumped into a nearby pond to escape her attacker, at which point he fled the scene.
Locals rescued Khazida from the pond and took her to Rampal upazila Health Complex.
“There were several stab injury marks on Khadiza's head, face and neck. She may have died on the way here due to excessive bleeding,” said Rampal upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr Marjiur Rabbi.
Police sources said Khadiza, 25, was married to Sheikh Zakir Hossain 10 years ago, but the relationship ended in divorce after the birth of their son Zobaer. She had been living at her father Golam Ali Sheikh's residence in Jhanjhania village under Sadar union following the divorce.
They added that Khadiza had gone to visit Zobaer in secret, as Zakir did not allow her to see him.
Rampal police station Officer-in-Charge Belayed Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that they had already sent Kazida's body to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
A case regarding the incident is yet to be filed.
