Awami League leader Bahauddin Nasim cleared in corruption case

Update : 29 Sep 2017, 12:06 PM
A Dhaka court acquitted Awami League's AFM Bahauddin Nasim in a case filed over allegedly amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and concealing asset information. Judge KM Imrul Kayes of Dhaka Special judges’ Court 6 on Thursday said the prosecution had failed to prove corruption charges against the Madaripur 3 MP. On September 18, the court set the date to deliver the verdict after completion of argument hearing. The court recorded testimonies of 11 out of 24 prosecution witnesses in the graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the ruling party organising secretary during the army-backed caretaker government. Many similar cases filed against politicians and businessmen during the 2007-08 regime were later dropped as they were deemed 'politically motivated'. Nasim dubbed the case a “petty one” after his acquittal. The ACC filed the case against Nasim and his wife Sultana Shamima Chowdhury with Ramna police on November 21, 2007, on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk1.83 crore and concealing information of wealth worth Tk17.58 lakh. ACC Assistant Director Rafiqul Islam, also the case's investigation officer, pressed charges only against Nasim in court on October 8 the next year.
