The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will hold further hearing on the appeals in the Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali murder case from October 17.
The apex court was scheduled to pronounce verdict in the case on Tuesday. However, instead of delivering the verdict, it fixed the further hearing date after death row convict Saiful Islam Mamun’s advocate-on-record Mahmuda Begum requested for re-hearing.
The advocate said that they could not place arguments on behalf of Saiful as he had no lawyer. Now, they have decided to engage a lawyer for him to place arguments before the Appellate Division.
Saiful, Al Amin, Rafiqul Islam Khokon, Akbar Ali Lalu, and Selim Chowdhury were sentenced to death by a Dhaka Court in December 2012.
The High Court later acquitted Selim, sentenced Al Amin, Khokon and Lalu to life in prison. It also confirmed the death sentence of Saiful.
The government then filed separate appeals with the Supreme Court seeking the death penalty for all the convicts.
Khalaf Al Ali was shot dead near of his Gulshan residence in March, 2012.
