The leaders of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held counter press conferences over the Chief Justice’s statement to the press that he was not ill and had been embarrassed by the prime minister’s criticism against him before he left for Australia on Friday night.
There was an altercation between BNP and Awami League backed lawyers during the first press conference on Saturday, when lawyers led by Ozi Ullah came to participate.
SCBA President Zainul Abedin announced that after the his speech no other leader of SCBA would be able to speak for the association, and whatever they do say, will be regarded as a personal statement. Vice-president Ozi Ullah held a second press conference.
Zainul said: “According to the constitution, the judiciary is the guardian of the constitution.”
SCBA secretary, A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon alleged that the Chief Justice’s letter presented by the law minister about his illness was fake. "Both the attorney general and law minister should resign,” he said.
Ozi Ullah said that the association’s president and secretary’s speeches were politically motivated: “We do not agree with their statements.”
