HC: Shishu Park can be moved to rebuild March 7 stage
The Jatiyo Shishu Park [National Children’s Park] at Dhaka’s Shahbagh can be moved elsewhere for the rebuilding of the stage at Suhrawardy Udyan where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had delivered his historic March 7 Speech, the High Court has said. The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah made the observation on Monday during the hearing of a petition. Advocate Basir Ahmed had filed the petition on Sunday seeking the court’s directives to reinstate the stage and argued for it, while Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas represented the state. During the hearing, the court said the stage erected for the March 7, 1971 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan was also the place where freedom fighters surrendered their weapons after the War of Independence. It said that an official thank you speech addressing then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi was also made from that same stage for the support and military assistance her country gave to Bangladesh during the war. But the Shishu Park was built on that spot to take down that stage, said the court expressing regret, but added: “But Shishu Park can be built elsewhere if needed.”

At the end of the hearing, the court issued a ruling upon the government asking why March 7 should not be declared as a National Day. It also asked why directives should not be given to rebuild the stage, install a sculpture of the iconic posture of Bangabandhu during his fiery March 7 Speech and a museum at the place. Later, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said: “I won’t say anything until I see the court’s observation about relocating the Shishu Park. But it is necessary to preserve the important spots inside Suhrawardy Udyan following investigation or survey.” This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
