
A Dhaka court on Monday dismissed a defamation case filed against former justice of Supreme Court, AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik – for calling former Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha a “razakar [collaborator].”
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Moinuddin Siddiqui came up with the dismissal order, Court Clerk Sheikh Tanvir Reza confirmed.
Tanvir said: “The plaintiff did not appear before court even if he was supposed to turn up today [Monday]. The prosecution side did not take any action in the case. Besides, the accused did not appear before court on three given dates.”
According to the complainant’s statement, former Appellate Division judge Manik, during a talk show on the TV channel DBC News on March 15, called the then chief justice a “self-confessed razakar and an anti-liberation element” .
On March 16, a Supreme Court lawyer issued a legal notice to Manik asking him to withdraw his statement within 72 hours or face legal action.
On March 29, Advocate Arfan Uddin Khan, former president of Dhaka Metropolitan Bar, filed a defamation case under section 500 and 501 of the penal code with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court against Manik.
