
A Chandpur court has sentenced five people to death and acquitted three others in a case filed over the murder of a man in Matlab upazila of the district.
Additional District and Session Judge Mamunur Rashid delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The death-row convicts are Md Faruq alias Nabi, 25, Md Ali Munshi, 28, Md Abdul Khaleq Mollah ,32, Yamin Bepari ,24, and Md Selim Majhi ,22. Of them, Faruq and Munshi are in custody, while the rest are on the run.
Those who were acquitted are Kamal Hawlader, Md Keramot Ali Mollah and Md Cherag Ali Mollah.
On October 5, 2008, the convicts kidnapped Masud Rana from his Ludhua village house in the upazila over previous enmity.
Rana was later suffocated to death. His body was hidden under water hyacinths, which was found floating in the water body on October 15.
Rana's father Md Rabiul Darji filed the case with North Matlab police station the same day, accusing five named and three unnamed people of the murder.
On Tuesday, in his immediate reaction to the verdict, Rabiul said he was disappointed at the acquittal of the three accused and that he would file an appeal with the High Court, challenging the lower court’s decision.
