
A Dhaka court has sentenced Marjina Begum, mother of Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, to six years' imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for hiding wealth information.
Judge of Special Trial Court 6 KM Imrul Qayes on Thursday also fined her Tk10,000 and ordered confiscation of one-thirds of her illegally amassed assets, said ACC lawyer Rafiqul Islam.
The court also sent Marjina to jail after cancelling bail on which she was out till now, he said.
Rafiqul said the court had sentenced her to three years’ imprisonment each under the Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004.
The ACC had filed the case at Ramna police station on April 12, 2015 for submitting false and fabricated wealth information.
At least 1,138 people, mostly ready-made garment workers, were killed and more than 2,500 others injured when the nine-storey Rana Plaza in Savar, owned by Marjina’s son Sohel Rana, came down crushing on April 24, 2013.
