3rd suspect put on 5-day remand in Mahid murder case
A Sylhet court has placed a man on a five-day remand in connection with the murder of Mahid Al Salam, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) who was killed in a mugging incident on Monday. Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Mamunur Rashid Siddique issued the order on Thursday as the investigation officer of the case sought seven-day remand to interrogate the accused, named Rasel. Surma police station OC Khairul Fazal said Rasel was produced before the court Thursday afternoon, reported UNB. He is the third suspect among the total of four who has been arrested and placed on remand. Earlier on Tuesday, Mirza Atik and Tayef Md Ripon, two other accused, were arrested in Sylhet's South Surma area.

Atik confessed to mugging and stabbing Mahid on Monday, which resulted in the latter's death, before the court on Wednesday. Tayef was placed on a three-day remand on the same day. According to Atik's statement, the trio with another mugger, riding two motorcycles, blocked SUST economics student Mahid's rickshaw on its way to Kadamtali bus stand around 1am on Monday. They immediately snatched away Mahid's mobile phone and tried to take his wallet. When Mahid refused to give it up, they stabbed him indiscriminately. Severely wounded, Mahid fell off the rickshaw, while the muggers stole Tk250 from his wallet. Mahid was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 1:30am, where the doctors said he had died from excessive bleeding.

Police is now looking for the fourth suspect. Atik said they had mugged Atik to pay for a meal the quartet had eaten at a restaurant nearby. Atik is an accused in five other mugging cases and has previously served eight years in prison for mugging, according to police. On the night Mahid was killed, he was on his way to Dhaka for a job interview. He was an employee of mobile phone operator Banglalink. He was the youngest among four children of late advocate and local Awami League leader Abdus Salam and lawyer Amina Salam. Following his death, his uncle ATM Hasan Jebul, organizing secretary of Awami League’s Sylhet city unit, filed a case with Surma police station on Tuesday night.
