A defamation case was filed against Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman on Thursday for publishing “offensive, false and defamatory” news about Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad.

Advocate Masudur Rahman Masud, district Jatiya Party president and central executive committee member, filed the Tk100 crore defamation case with the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Nahid Nasrin.

Taking cognisance of the complaint, the court asked the officer-in-charge of Palong Model police station to submit a report after investigating, said the plaintiff.

According to the case statement, the Daily Amar Desh published a news item mentioning that Ershad married his adopted daughter Nipa Rani Karmakar on May 13 at the Dhakeshwari National Temple which is false.

It was also claimed that the news has tarnished the image of the former president.
