A Rangamati court has put three leaders of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) on a two-day remand for the killing of six people, including Naniarchar upazila parishad Chairman, Shaktimaan Chakma, and UPDF (Ganotantrik) chief, Tapan Jyoti Chakma.
Rangamati Senior Judicial Magistrate, Md Zahed Ahmed, gave the order after police produced them before his court seeking a seven-day remand on Wednesday.
The three UPDF leaders – Sukrity Chakma, 40, Kantamoy Chakma, 35, and Jiku Chakma, 25 – were arrested from the EPZ and Bayazid areas of Chittagong early Tuesday.
On May 3, Shaktimaan Chakma, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot to death by unidentified assailants in front of the upazila parishad complex.
Five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of supporters of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad chairman at Betchhari in the upazila, the following day.
Two cases were filed for the killings against 118 people, including UPDF chief, Khisa.
