The High Court has granted six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation case over her 'derogatory remarks' about freedom fighters and martyred intellectuals.
The bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition filed by Khaleda's counsel, reports UNB.
The petition was filed on Monday after a Dhaka Court denied bail in the case on August 7.
Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Khaleda while Deputy Attorney General Kamrul Ahsan Khan Aslam represented the state.
On January 5, 2016, AB Siddiqui, president of Jananetri Parishad, filed the case with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
As per the prosecution, Khaleda Zia questioned the number of Liberation War martyrs at a discussion held in Dhaka on December 21, 2015. She also made objectionable remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
