The minister says Tarique had planned to annihilate Awami League and Sheikh Hasina

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said the government may consider whether it will move the High Court after receiving the copy of the verdict in the August 21 grenade attack cases.

Despite being satisfied with the judgment, the government may seek tougher punishment for BNP leaders Tarique Rahman, Harris Chowdhury and Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad since they were given life imprisonment, he said.

The minister was talking to reporters in his office in Dhaka on Wednesday, minutes after a Dhaka court delivered verdict in the case.

Dhaka’s First Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Tarique and 18 others to life imprisonment while 19 people including former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar was given death sentence in the case.

“Tarique should have been awarded capital punishment, because he was the mastermind of the attack,” said Anisul.

Tarique, currently the acting chairman of BNP and living in London, had planned to annihilate Awami League and Sheikh Hasina, Anisul added.

“We are happy that the people have at least been served justice. Interestingly, the BNP-led government could not ensure justice even for the party’s slain founding president Ziaur Rahman,” he continued.

The minister said the then BNP government made conspiracies to hush up the attack, but failed to do that.

“Soon after the tenure of the BNP-led government expired and the caretaker government took the office, reinvestigation into the case started identifying the real culprits,” he recounted.

A sinister plot was devised to kill Hasina back then and the Joj Mia drama was staged to protect the masterminds of the attack, the minister further said.

However, after the Awami League government came into power, it began to revive every murder case and the August 21 grenade attack case is the latest on the list, stated Anisul.

The latest verdict implies that the rule of law is still in place in the country, and the judiciary is quite independent, he observed.
