The High Court issued a rule, asking the concerned authorities why former caretaker government adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein should not be transferred to Dhaka for better treatment.
The bench of Justices Syed Refaat Ahmed and Md Iqbal Kabir issued the rule after hearing a petition filed by Mainul's wife Saju Hosein, on Sunday, reports UNB.
Home ministry secretary, inspector general of police (IGP), IGP (Prison), Rangpur jail authorities have been directed to come up with an explanation within a week.
Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Abdur Rahim stood for Mainul while Deputy Attorney General Kazi Zinat Haq represented the state.
Earlier on November 8, the High Court asked the concernedauthorities of Rangpur jail and Rangpur Medical College Hospital to conduct medical tests on Barrister Mainul Hosein and submit the report within three days.
The bench also asked the authorities to provide sufficient security for Mainul, if he is transferred to another jail from Rangpur jail.
Meanwhile, the High Court fixed next Sunday for the hearing.
On November 7, Saju Hosein, wife of Mainul, filed two separate writ petitions in connection with the assault of Mainul at Rangpur court.
Mainul, who was a guest on Ekkator TV’s talk show program “Ekattorer Journal,” via video conference, made “offensive comments” against host Mithila Farzana on October 16.
On October 22, Rangpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court judge Arifa Yasmin Mukta issued a warrant for Mainul's arrest after local human rights activist Mili Maya filed a defamation case against him.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaisarul Islam sent Mainul to jail for the case on October 23.
Barrister Mainul Hosein was later assaulted, allegedly by some leaders and activists of the Awami League, while he was being produced before the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on November 4.
