A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death in connection with the killing of three female relatives in the Chawkbazar area in 2016.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Farhana Ferdous handed down the verdict, also fining convict Al Islam alias Jibon of the Jajira upazila in Shariatpur Tk20,000.
According to the prosecution, Islam married one Sumi of West Islamabag in Chawkbazar. Sumi died while giving birth to their second child.
Islam got involved in a clash with his mother-in-law Rashida when he tried to take his children to Shariatpur, whereas, a court had already given her the children's custody.
On July 4, 2016, Islam went to his mother-in-law's house and locked into an altercation with Rashida, her daughter Shima, and granddaughter Banna over custody of the children.
At one stage, Islam stabbed the three indiscriminately. Rashida died on the spot while the other two succumbed to their injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police arrested Islam on August 9, 2016, after Rashida's brother filed a case with the Chawkbazar police station.
The charge sheet accusing Islam was filed on December 25 that year.
