HC: No bail for Rana Plaza owner

The High Court discharged a rule on the bail petiton of Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza which collapsed in 2013 and killed 1,136 people.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam, on Tuesday, disposed off the rule asking why bail should not be granted to Sohel Rana. 

The writ was filed by Rana's wife, Nurunnahar on April 18, 2016.

Advocate Mohammed Sazzad Ali Chowdhury appeared for Rana, Kurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Deputy Attorney General, AKM Amin Uddin Manik appeared for the state.

On June 15, 2014, ACC Deputy Assistant Director, SM Mofidul Islam lodged the case accusing 17 people including Rana, on charges of irregularities during construction of the building.

The eight-storey Rana Plaza collapsed on 24 April 2013, claiming at least 1,135 lives and injuring nearly 2,500 people, most of them female workers of the five factories housed in the building.

HC orders disposal of case by 6 months.

The High Court also directed the lower court to dispose of the case by six months.

The High Court bench passed the order disposing of a rule issued earlier over Sohel Rana's bail in the case.

On May 9, 2016, the High Court issued the rule after Rana's wife filed an application on April 18 of the same year seeking his bail.
