Another given life term and fined Tk20,000
A court in Dhaka has sentenced six men to death and another to life imprisonment for killing Aminul Haque Khadem, alias Anis Khadem, an administrative officer at the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner's office, in 2009.
Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 passed the order in a jam-packed courtroom on Thursday.
The condemned convicts are Shahidur Rahman Khadem, alias Mama Khadem, Mahabub Alam Liton, alias Dutch Bhanga Liton, Sheikh Shamim Ahamed, Md Jewel, Kamal Hossain Biplob, and Sohel, alias Cats Eye Sohel, and the lifer is Abdullah Mohammad Nazim Uddin Babu, alias TNT Babu, alias Honda Babu.
Honda Babu was also fined Tk20,000, or in default, to serve one more year in jail.
Of those convicted, Liton, Biplob, and Babu were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Aminul Islam Khadem was gunned down by the convicts in front of Malibagh Shahi mosque on May 3, 2009, over grabbing of a property in Ahmedullah Estate and Mazar.
The victim was the general secretary of Kharampur Mazar Committee in Akhaura of Brahmanbaria district.
His son, Saidul Haque Khadem, filed a murder case with Motijheel police station on May 4.
On November 30, 2009, Mujibur Rahman of Rapid Action Battalion 3 submitted a charge-sheet accusing eight people of the murder. The court framed charges against the accused on June 8, 2014.
After examining all the records and 17 witnesses, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 Judge, Abdur Rahman Sarder, gave the verdict, acquitting one of the accused.
The tribunal cross examined a total 17 out of 30 witnesses, including the victim’s son, Saidul Haque Khadem, the investigation officer, the doctor who conducted the post-mortem, and the magistrates who recorded the confessional statements of the accused.
In the observation the court said: “This killing is a heinous incident and is also premeditated killing. So there is no scope to show any sympathy to the convicts.”
