'Recording anybody’s statement and sending it to others is a heinous act'

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Friday said his office will strongly oppose the bail petition of former officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonagazi Police Station, Moazzem Hossain, in the case filed for recording a statement of Nusrat Jahan Rafi and putting it on social media.

“Recording anybody’s statement and sending it to others is a heinous act.” Former OC of Sonagazi upazila recorded a statement of Nusrat and sent the video clip to others, which is a serious offence. We will strongly oppose his bail petition,” said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam to reporters at his office on the Supreme Court premises.

“The police have pressed charges against 16 people for brutally killing Nusrat Jahan Rafi, but her family demanded making Moazzem the main accused in the case, the Attorney General added.

“Nusrat's family is requesting to make the OC main accused in the case. But including Moazzem in the case is an issue for the investigating officer”.  We will place strong objections before the court so that he does not get bail, said the Attorney General.

OC Moazzem filed a bail petition with the High Court after PBI submitted the charge sheet to a Feni court on Wednesday.

Feni Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi was called to Sonagazi Police Station by then OC Moazzem, after she accused her principal Sirajuddoula of sexually harassing her. The OC unlawfully interrogated her and recorded the whole incident on a mobile phone.

The clip was later released on social media.

Supreme Court lawyer Syedul Haque Sumon filed the case against Moazzem under the Digital Security Act on May 15. Dhaka Cyber Tribunal ordered the OC's arrest on May 27 when PBI found the allegations against him to be true.

Nusrat was set on fire by people loyal to madrasa teacher Sirajuddoula on April 6. She died of severe burn injuries four days later.
