The lawyer said he will go to another bench on Monday with the writ

Two separate High Court benches have refused to hear a writ petition that sought their directive on law enforcers arresting within 24 hours all the accused in the murder case of Rifat Sharif in Barguna.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal declined to hear the petition, saying that the law enforcers have reportedly arrested some of the accused and are trying to catch the others.

"Police are working to arrest all the accused persons, have patience," the bench said.

Supreme Court lawyer and petitioner of the writ, Advocate Dr Eunus Ali Akond, said another High Court bench of Justice of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil also declined to hear the same petition and advised him to move it before another bench.

The second bench also suggested him to go to another bench. Later, the lawyer said he will go to another bench on Monday with the writ.

Advocate Eunus said he also seeks a High Court rule asking the relevant respondents to reply why their inaction to ensure citizens’ security should not be declared illegal.

The writ in question seeks responses from secretaries to the home and law ministries, inspector general of police, director generals of Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, Barguna deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, and Barguna police station officer-in-charge.

On June 26, three people hacked Rifat with sharp weapons near the main gate of Barguna College, right in front of his wife and other onlookers, leaving him critically injured.

He was rushed to Barguna General Hospital, and later moved to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctors declared him dead around 4pm.

The entire incident was captured on video that went viral on social media platforms. It showed the armed assailants hacking at Rifat indiscriminately as his wife tries to save him.
