The High Court has ordered the launch of an investigation against Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa's managing committee Chairman Enamul Karim in connection with the murder of Nusrat Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

The bench of justices FRM Nazmul Ahsan and KM Kamrul Kader passed the order on Monday, after hearing a writ petition in this regard.

The court also directed the secretaries of home and education to head the investigation, and submitted the report before it by August 18.

The bench also issued a ruling regarding why necessary action should not be taken against Enamul – also Feni Additional District Magistrate (ADM) – for his inaction over Nusrat’s murder.

The editor of Bangla daily Samakal, the secretaries of education and home, the IGP, DC and SP of Feni district, and the OC of Sonagazi police station were all made respondents in the rule.

Advocate Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ with the High Court on June 30, with an annexed report published by Samakal on June 21.

The Samakal article was about an investigation that had been conducted by the Police Headquarters and subsequently a report that had been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to the report, on April 4, Nusrat and her mother went to ADM Enamul's office to register a complaint against madrasa Principal Sirajuddaula, but Enamul did not take any action.

The report said Enamul rather suggested them to forget about the incident.

He reportedly said: “What are you doing here? You have already filed a case. If you had come to me before filing the case, I could have done something.”

He also reportedly asked Nusrat why she had gone to the principal even after knowing how he was.

On April 6, 18-year-old Nusrat, an Alim examinee, was set on fire on the roof of the madrasa by people loyal to Sirajuddaula in broad daylight, after she refused to withdraw thr sexual harassment case her family had filed against him on May 27.

She died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 – sparking nationwide outrage and leading authorities to take swift action.

The Police Bureau of Investigation on May 29 submitted the charge sheet in the murder case against 16 people, including Sirajuddaula. The tribunal indicted them on June 20.
