The court has recorded statements of 15 prosecution witnesses so far

A former member of the management committee and an office assistant of Feni’s Sonagazi Islamia Senior (Fazil) Madrasa have testified in court in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case.

Judge Mamunur Rashid of Feni’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal recorded the statements of Sheikh Abdul Halim Mamun, former management committee member, and Office Assistant Mohammed Yusuf on Sunday.

M Shahjahan Saju, lawyer of Nusrat’s family, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune, and said the court also fixed Monday to record the statements of three other witnesses.

So far, 15 prosecution witnesses, including Nusrat’s elder brother Mahmudul Hassan Noman who filed the case on April 8, have testified in court.

In his statement, Halim said that Md Sirajuddaula, the now suspended principal of the madrasa, had always denied his requests to secure the campus by installing CCTV cameras throughout the madrasa premises.

Yusuf told the court that most of the madrasa faculty knew about Sirajuddaula’s perversity towards the female students. But everyone was afraid to speak up as their jobs were on his hands.

The recording of witness statements started on June 27.

On April 6, Nusrat, an 18-year-old Alim examinee, was set on fire on the roof of the madrasa by people loyal to Sirajuddaula in broad daylight, after she refused to withdraw a sexual harassment case her family filed against him on May 27.

She succumbed to her critical burn injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 — which sparked a nationwide outrage and led the authorities to take swift action.

The Police Bureau of Investigation on May 29 submitted the charge sheet in the murder case against 16 people, including Sirajuddaula. The tribunal indicted them on June 20.
