2005 series bomb blast: 5 JMB men get 12yrs jail

A Dhaka court has sentenced five Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) men to 12 years rigorous imprisonment in a case filed over the series of bomb blasts across Bangladesh in 2005.

Judge Md Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Tribunal 2  passed the verdict on Sunday.

The convicts are Abdullah Al Shuhail, Md Musa alias Mustafizur Rahman alias Samad, Md Abdur Rahman Masud, Habibur Rahman and Md Nurul Islam alias Uzzal. Of them, Habibur and Musa are absconding.

The court also fined them Tk30,000 each, in default, they will have to serve an additional six months in jail.

They were convicted in the case filed for the bombing in front of Rajuk Trade Centre Shopping Mall in Dhaka’s Khilkhet area during the nationwide bombing 14 years ago.

A total of 19 out of 47 prosecution witnesses testified before the court in the case.

On August 17, 2005, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in 63 out of the 64 districts across the country. 

The bombs exploded in half an hour from 11:30am for which the banned militant outfit JMB claimed responsibility.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Kawsar Alam filed a case with Khilkhet police station under the Explosive Substances Act accusing unknowns on the same day of the blasts.

After concluding investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused to court on November 2, 2005 while the same court on June 12, 2006 indicted five convicts JMB men in the case.
