He said Khaleda cannot be provided with better treatment, if she does not permit

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said the Supreme Court ordered BSMMU doctors to provide better treatment to Khaleda Zia, with her permission, though it has dismissed her bail plea.

"BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health report, submitted before the apex court on Wednesday, was read out in the Appellate Division, which showed that her physical condition has not deteriorated significantly," he said.

He made the statement while talking to journalists in front of his office on Thursday.

The attorney general said a lower court sentenced Khaleda Zia to seven years jail under the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. Later, she filed a bail petition with High Court, which was rejected.

A leave petition was then filed against the order with the Appellate Division, seeking bail, which has been dismissed by the court on Thursday, he added.

He also said if Khaleda Zia agrees, the court has ordered Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) doctors to provide her with better treatment.

Earlier, two other health reports of Khaleda Zia were submitted before the court in 2018 and 2019. When compared with the report, submitted a day before the hearing, not much difference was seen, he added.

According to her latest report, Khaleda has two knee replacements, one in 1990 and another in 2002, which are no more effective. She refuses to take special injections, required to make her knee condition better. However, the court has ordered to manage the injections if she permits, said Mahbubey Alam.

Khaleda's lawyer Advocate Zainul Abedin has claimed the health report submitted before the court was not valid.

Khaleda, a three-time former prime minister, has been in prison since February last year, serving a total of 17 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases.

The 74-year-old was admitted to BSMMU for treatment on April 1, from the old central jail at Nazim Uddin Road. She has been in the hospital since then.

Unlike other convicts, Khaleda has been kept in a VIP cabin and not in BSMMU prison cell.   Along with hospital authorities, a maid is present for 24-hours to take care of her. However, without her permission, she cannot be provided with better treatment, the attorney general added.
