A Cox’s Bazar court on Wednesday sent two men to jail, accused of attempting to rape a tourist, an Australian woman, at the Good Vibe Cottage in Pechardwip of Ramu upazila.
Police detained the two suspects Ansar Ullah, 24, and Abdul Gafur, 20, from the spot following the incident on Sunday night, while another suspect Belal Uddin, 25, is currently on the run.
In preliminary interrogation, Ansar and Abdul, both staff of the Good Vibe Cottage, confessed to being involved in the rape attempt on the woman at the resort on Sunday, said police.
Ramu police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abul Khayer said: “A case was filed naming three prime suspects, also accusing five to six unidentified individuals in connection with the incident.”
Police, acting on suspicion, also detained cottage owner Shamimul Hoque for interrogation but could not provide further information in this regard as this is an ongoing investigation.
A local source said Shamimul Hoque lived with his brother Anisul Hoque, owner of the Mermaid Beach Resort. Around one and a half years ago, Shamimul started the aforementioned Good Vibe Cottage next to the Mermaid Beach Resort.
The source also said Shamimul was likely involved in the rape attempt on the Australian national as he was previously known to facilitate various illicit activities at his establishment.
On Sunday night, an Australian national staying at the Good Vibe Cottage was victim to a rape attempt, when some men broke into her room and tried to rape her. When she resisted and shouted, the men fled the scene.
Soon after, five people were detained, three of whom were released after interrogation.
Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police Md Iqbal Hossain said police were investigating the incident as an utmost priority.
