Another accused sent to jail

A Dhaka court has placed four more people on a one-day remand in connection with the attack on journalist Mostafizur Rahman Sumon during the Dhaka city polls.

Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after police produced Md Alauddin Ali, 22, Masud Mia, 19, Rasel Hawlader, 34, and Jahirul Islam alias Apu Mia, 24, before the court on Sunday.

Mohammadpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain, also the investigation officer (IO) in the case, sought a seven-day remand to quiz them under police custody.

Opposing the remand petition, defence counsels submitted separate petitions seeking bail for their clients, but the court rejected the plea after hearing.

On February 8, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended the four at different parts of Dhaka in connection with the journalist attack.

Among the arrestees, Apu Mia is the brother-in-law of the councillor of Ward 34 of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Sheikh Mohammed Hossain Khokon.

The total number of arrestees stood at five as police arrested one Ismail Hossain over the incident at Rayerbazar area in Dhaka on February 5.

Ismail was also put on a one-day remand under police custody on February 6.

On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayed sent him to jail after he was produced before the court upon completion of the remand.

On February 1, online portal Agami News reporter Mostafizur Rahman Sumon was badly injured when he was attacked allegedly by the supporters of the DNCC Ward 34 councillor candidate Sheikh Mohammed Hossain Khokon at the Zafrabad High School centre in Mohammadpur around 11am.

On February 3, Sumon filed a case against unnamed accused with Mohammadpur police station.
