A Dhaka labour court on Wednesday acquitted Grameen Communications Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case filed over violation of labour law rules.
Labour Court 3 Chairman Rahibul Islam had passed the order on February 20, after Dr Yunus and the others appeared before the court and apologized by admitting non-compliance with the Bangladesh Labour Act.
Then they sought acquittal from the charges, pledging that such mistake and offences would not happen anymore in the future and they would follow the law.
After the hearing, the court fined each of them Tk7,500, and acquitted them from the case after they paid the fine.
The three other Grameen Communications officials who were accused in the case are Managing Director Naznin Sultana, Director Abdul Hai Khan, and Deputy General Manager Gouri Shankar.
On January 5, Inspector (General) Tariqul Islam of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Labour had filed the case with Labour Court 3 against the four for violating 10 rules of the Labour Act.
According to case details, the plaintiff found the violations when he visited the Grameen Communications office on October 10, 2019.
Earlier, on April 30 that year, the company was asked to address the violations, and on May 7, Grameen Communications submitted their written explanations that were not satisfactory, it said.
Inspector Tariqul during his on October 10 visit found proof of 10 labour law violations and inquired about them on October 28. The defendants took time to give their statements on violating the labour law, but they did not do so.
