Of the total, 5,730 accused secured bail last week
Lower courts across Bangladesh in the last 45 working days have granted bail to 60,407 people after hearings their pleas virtually in different cases.
Supreme Court spokesperson and High Court Division Special Officer Md Saifur Rahman confirmed the matter to BSS on Sunday.
He said the apex court on May 10 had directed the lower courts concerned to hold hearing only on bail matters virtually in line with the special practice direction issued by the Supreme Court during the ongoing general holiday.
“As per the apex court’s direction, the lower courts across the country have heard 120,904 bail pleas in the last 45 working days between May 11 and July 16 and granted bail to 60,407 accused,” Saifur said.
Of these, 13,867 bail pleas were heard between July 12 and July 16 and 5,730 accused were allowed bail.
During the 45 working days, 698 child accused were also granted bail.
Between July 12 and July 16, lower courts across the country also heard 5,319 pleas regarding surrendering before the court, Saifur said. The courts also sent 1,174 accused to jail during that period.
The Supreme Court earlier issued 21 special practice directions for lower courts to hold trial virtually. The apex court also issued virtual courtroom usage manual for lawyers.
