A tribunal has framed changes against Md Mojnu, the lone accused in the rape of a Dhaka University student in Dhaka's Kurmitola area earlier this year.

Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the 7th Prevention of Women and Children Repression Tribunal framed the charges in the case on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Mojnu was produced before the court through videoconferencing from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

After the charge framing, the tribunal fixed September 9 for recording deposition of witnesses in the case.

Special Public Prosecutor Afroza Farhana Ahmed read out the charges against the accused during the hearing and asked whether he was guilty or not.

The accused, Mojnu, then claimed innocence and prayed for justice.

On March 16, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted the charge sheet before a court in Dhaka against the lone accused.

Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Forensic Unit head Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed that a DNA test with samples from the girl confirmed Mojnu’s involvement in the crime.

On January 5, a second year student of DU was raped in Kurmitola after she mistakenly got off a bus there around 7pm on her way to a friend's house at Joar Sahara area.

The incident caused shockwaves and triggered massive protests by students and humanitarian organizations across the country.

The rape survivor's father filed a case with Cantonment police station over the incident, which was transferred to the DB police on January 6.

On January 8, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mojnu in the capital's Shewra rail crossing area.

On January 16, Mojnu gave a statement before a Dhaka court confessing his involvement in the crime.
