Concluding its argument, the prosecution on Monday sought the death penalty for the five militants accused in the case filed for the murder of blogger Oyasiqur Rahman Babu.

Md Salahuddin Howlader, the assistant public prosecutor of the case, sought the highest punishment in concluding the prosecution’s argument before a tribunal on behalf of the state.

After the hearing on the arguments made by the prosecution, Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court Judge Md Rabiul Alam set Thursday for hearing the arguments of the defence.

The public prosecutor told the tribunal they were able to prove the charges brought against the accused of the case.

During the hearing, Md Salahuddin also cited different points from the statements of the 24 out of 40, prosecution witnesses.

Earlier, on September 7, on completion of recording statements of the prosecution, the tribunal set Monday (September 21) to start hearing the arguments.

On July 20, 2016, the court framed charges against five members of the banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

Three of the five accused who are now in jail, appeared before the court during the hearings of the case.

The three accused are, Zikrullah alias Hasan, Md Ariful Islam alias Arif alias Mushfiq, and Md Saiful Islam alias Mansur.

The two other accused – Abdullah alias Md Akram Hossain Hasib alias Boro Bhai, and Mowlana Juned Ahamed alias Junayed alias Taher – have been absconding since the incident. Charges were framed against them in their absence.

According to the charge sheet, Akram, known as “Boro Bhai” among ABT members, masterminded the blogger's killing.

Zikrullah, Ariful, and Juned, who had been enraged by Oyasiqur’s write-ups on Facebook and other social media platforms, participated in the killing mission on March 30, 2015.

Cleaver-wielding Zikurullah and Ariful, who are madrasa students, were chased down by locals when they were fleeing after hacking Oyasiqur to death at Begunbari in the capital’s Tejgaon Industrial Area.

On September 2, 2015, DB inspector Moshiur Rahman, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the five accused to the Dhaka CMM court in the case.

The 27-year-old online activist was a trainee officer at a travel agency in Motijheel. He completed his studies from Government Tejgaon College in the capital and was from Hajipur village of Ramganj upazila in Laxmipur district.

On March 30, he was brutally hacked to death by three cleaver-wielding youths on his way to office in the capital’s Tejgaon Industrial area in broad daylight.
