A court in Rajshahi has sentenced an engineer to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment on charges of making obscene video footage of a student of Rajshahi University (RU) around five years back.

Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court Judge Shah Muhammad Jakir Hassan found Partha Kumar Ghosh guilty of the charge and pronounced the verdict in his presence on Thursday.

The court also fined him Tk1 lakh, and two months extra in jail in case of default.

The convict is Partha Protim Ghosh, 30, son of late Probir Kumar Ghosh of Kazla area under Motihar Police Station in Rajshahi city.

Since passing out from the department of computer science and engineering in Ahsanullah Science and Technology University in Dhaka, Partha has been working at a private company in the capital city for the last couple of years.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused developed a relationship with a student of Rajshahi University, and at one stage he made an obscene video and took photographs of her in 2015.

Later the convict demanded Tk1 lakh from her father after showing him the photographs and video.

When her father refused to pay the money, Partha threatened to upload the photographs and video on social media.

The student lodged a case with Boalia police station in this connection on December 22, 2015.

Advocate Muhammad Muniruzzaman conducted the case on behalf of the state.
