A man accused in a case filed for raping with the promise of marriage, was married to the “victim” woman in jail as per the wishes from both of the plaintiff and the accused of the case.

The marriage took place in jail around 12:30pm on Thursday after an order notice from the High Court stated that court will acquit the accused if a marriage is officiated upon the will of both parties.

Jail authorities, the bride and bridegroom parties, also Moniruzzaman, assistant commissioner of the district administration were present at the wedding inside the office of the jailer of Feni District Jail.

A report certifying the marriage with permission of both parties was asked to be sent to the court within 30 days and only then will the accused in the case be released, said Anwarul Karim, superintendent of the jail.

Both families of the bride and her groom have expressed their satisfaction over the matter.

The bride, said: “The court has ensured justice by enabling me to gain my right. Now I want my husband to be free as soon as possible so that we can start a family.”

Earlier in May this year, the accused, Ziauddin, developed a romantic relationship with the woman.

In the case filed on May 27, the woman said that Zia had raped her , promising to marry her on multiple occasions but had declined to live up to the promise.

Police found the rape allegations to be true and arrested Zia the same day.

At the trial on November 1, both families of Zia and the woman wanted to dismiss the case with an agreement of marriage,  said Faruq Alamgir, a lawyer at the High Court.

This story has been corrected. The previous version had incorrectly stated  a High Court order.
