A Dhaka court has sentenced a student of Dhaka City College to jail until death and five others to life terms in the case filed over the murder of Government Laboratory School student Ayaz Haq.
Judge Mohammad Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judges Court 5 pronounced the verdict at noon on Thursday.
The convicts – Injamamul Islam alias Jisan got jail until death while Tawhidul Islam, Mashiur Rahman Araf, Tawhidul Islam Shubho, Abu Saleh Md Nasim, and Arif Hossain Rigan were given life terms.
Of the accused, Araf, Shuvo, Abu Saleh, and Rigan were tried in absentia.
All the convicts were students of the business studies department of the capital’s Dhaka City College.
All the convicts were also fined TK10,000 each, and will have to serve three more months in jail in default.
A total of 16 witnesses out of 47 testified before the court on different dates in the case.
On June 14, 2014, 17-year-old Ayaz, a student of Government Laboratory High School, was stabbed to death during a clash between two groups of college students over a football match in Dhaka’s Jigatola area.
Following the incident, the victim’s father, High Court lawyer Shahidul Haq, filed a case with Dhanmondi police station the same day.
Ayaz had completed his SSC from Government Laboratory High School that year and was waiting to get admission into college.
Later, on May 13, 2015, SI Md Sohidul Biswas of the same police station and investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted a charge sheet against the convicts.
The court framed charges against the convicts on November 24, 2016.
