A Dhaka court has placed a private bank official on a two-day remand in a case lodged over torturing a 14-year-old house help.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam passed the order on Friday as police produced Asadur Rahman Arif before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand.

The victim was rescued from Arif's home by her sister on June 30 and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She later filed the case against Asadur and his wife Mahfuza Rahman.

She had been working at the house of Arif and Mahfuza for the last eight months, when the couple had tortured her mercilessly for every little or no fault.

"They used to pour hot water on me, burn me with hot spoons and bang my head on the wall. I tried to flee the home on several occasions but they didn't let me go out," the girl told police.
