Till now, four people have been arrested in the case
Concluding its argument, the prosecution on Sunday sought death penalty for eight members of Ansar al-Islam in Xulhaz-Tonoy murder case in Dhaka on April 25, 2016.
Md Golam Sharuar Khan Zakir, the special public prosecutor of the case, sought the highest punishment after concluding the prosecution argument before a special tribunal.
After concluding the hearing on the arguments from the prosecution, Judge Md Mojibur Rahman of Dhaka’s Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal fixed Monday for the defence argument.
The public prosecutor told the tribunal that they were able to prove the charges against the accused.
Earlier, the tribunal completed recording statements of the prosecution and defence witnesses.
Till now, four of the accused in the case have been arrested. They are: Mozammel Hussain alias Saimon, 25, chief of Ansar al-Islam's intelligence and media wing; Md Arafat Rahman, 24, coordinator of the military wing of Ansar al-Islam; Md Sheikh Abdullah, 27; and operational wing member Asadullah, 25.
They were sent back to jail after the court appearance on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Syed Md Ziaul Huq alias major Zia (sacked army major), 42, Akram Hossain, 30, Sabbirul Haque Chowdhury, 26, and Md Zunaid Ahmad alias Maulana Zuned alias Zunaid, 26, are still absconding.
The trial against the eight accused started on November 19, 2020.
Inspector Md Monirul Islam of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police, who is also the investigation officer of the case, presented the charge sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court on July 28, 2019.
On July 23, the CTTC unit of police submitted the charge sheet against the eight accused in the case.
On April 25, 2016, Xulhaz, an LGBT activist, and a local employee of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and his friend, theatre activist Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy, were hacked to death by miscreants at the former’s Kalabagan residence in Dhaka.
On April 26, 2016, Minhaz Mannan Emon, Xulhaz’s brother, lodged a murder case with the Kalabagan police station demanding justice for his brother.
Initially, the Detective Branch of police investigated the double murder, but the CTTC took over the case on November 15, 2017.
