4 get death penalty for murdering Shariatpur teacher

Nine others awarded life imprisonment

A Dhaka court has sentenced four people to death in a case filed over the murder of a teacher in Shariatpur in 2010.

Third Speedy Trial Tribunal’s Judge Monir Kamal delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

The condemned convicts are Nuruzzaman Khan, Jahangir Matbar, Zulhas Matbor and Chan Mia of Sadar upazila in Shariatpur. The court also fined them Tk20,000 each.

The court also awarded life imprisonment to nine other accused over their involvement in the murder of Abdus Samad Azad, the headmaster of Chikandi Saraf Ali High School and College in Shariatpur’s Palang.

The nine convicts are Abdul Halim Molla, Azizul Matbar, Faruk Khan, Azahar Matbar, Mizan Mir, Akter Gazi, Jalil Matbar, Emdad Matbar and Lal Mia of Shariatpur Sadar.

The court also fined them Tk20,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.

According to the prosecution, Azad was stabbed to death by the convicts in the Santoshpur Bus stand area in Sadar upazila on January 15, 2010.

A case was filed in this connection at Palong Police Station.

On August 14, 2010, police submitted the charge sheet against 17 people. 

On May 11, 2011, police submitted a charge sheet again against 19 people after the plaintiff filed a no-confidence petition.

A Shariatpur court framed charges against the accused on January 20, 2016.

On April 9, 2018, the case was shifted to the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Dhaka.
